Escape Neuburg Keep

Escape Neuburg Keep

Tammy Badowski's companion to Beneath Nightmare Castle, which has been on the downloads page for a while, can now be played online.

You wake up from a dream in which you were being eaten by a ghoul. All you can recall from this nightmare was its teeth biting into your forearm, your blood leaking out on the floor, and your muscles being gnawed on desperately. The sound of the ghoul biting down onto your forearm bone was what woke you up. The crunch... the gurgling... the hissing delight of laughter...

The gamebook is short, but not at all sweet... be aware there are some rather graphic descriptions in this one.

Play it here

I loved it! Even though I never cared much for Beneath Nightmare Castle. Your story was disgusting, and I mean that as a compliment. When it ended I genuinely wanted it to continue. The nods to Vlad the Impaler were nice too, but seriously sick.

If I had one negative it would be to question the adult language of the story. Not because I'm a prude but because I don't think it fits in with FF.

First time on this website. Quite interestingly gory and abysmal, but may not be to a everyone's taste. A bit short compared to my Fighting Fantasy books. Somehow, the story does not really grip or entrance me. Variations besides gory and strange scenes may be better, and the story is somewhat distant at times, though is enjoyed some of the more exciting parts.
Welcome Ken, and thanks very much for your comment.

Regarding size, the gamebooks on this site are all different lengths, ranging from 30 to 1000 references, including several that are of or near the standard 400. If you want to know in advance what you're getting you can look here.

I escaped, but that's not the best way to solve the game, apparently...
Presumably that's the ending where you die soon after escaping. There's a better one than that.

Not much better luck, this time...

Yeah I got that ending too. The adventure took me 3 or 4 attempts. I wish there was more of it.

..... spent a long time in my cell..... they cut out my tounge for lying to them and threw me back in my cell where I had to stay awake to fight off giant insects that would come from time to time... they caught me trying to escape and broke me neck.......

lots and lots of gore and torture, but I wish there was a little more choice, also the descriptions while starting quite atmospheric seemed to drop off as time went on which was a little disappointing.

Well if that was the good ending, ---- hmmm, this is pretty grim, not a gamebook more like an extended journey through a chamber of horrors. Really it sort of got to the point where the torture was so overdone I sort of stopped caring bout what plot there was.

A shame, sinse if the atmosphere had been used to make a game where you actually got a bit choice and where you really got to escape this could've been more fun.
That wasn't the good ending. If it was, after 'THE END', there would have been 'CONGRATULATIONS / You have completed Escape Neuburg Keep'. That's something that I put in about a year ago because it wasn't always clear when you had reached the best ending of a gamebook.

The plot isn't complicated of course, but then there's only 30 references. Yes, as Phil suggests, it would be nice if there was a bit more of it, but unless Tammy decides to write some more that's all there is. I would say that the fun in this one comes primarily from the uniquely gory atmosphere (for an FF gamebook anyway).

I keep getting the feeling that this game is made for some kind of masochist gamer as it limits you from doing anything other than watching the 'cutscenes' and dealing with bugs. the fight with zombified mutants is not even a memorable 'good' fight. I guess it's understandable since you're playing as a prisoner. A heroic death is an okay reward I guess; however I have to admit Escape from Neuburg Keep has became some kind of a guilty pleasure :/ so good job
overall 5/10

I'm at #41. I've escaped from Neuberg Keep, which would seem to be a good ending. But then it clearly says that this is a bad ending. Have I won, or lost? Or is "winning" and "losing" not really the object of the game/story?

The paragraph does tell me that unless I can find a healer, I will most likely die. But this leaves me with good possibilities that I won't die. "Most likely" means that I might not die even if I don't find a Healer, and of course, I could find one.

In the progression of the story, I suffered a minor injury at the beginning, costing 2 stamina. At this escape paragraph, I'm still at 17 stamina. Though tortured and weak as part of the story. But, escaping so quickly without major injuries, it only adds to my good probability of survival.

This is my first run through of the story, so I don't know if other endings have you do more heroic things, like killing the priests, freeing the prisoners, etc. But given that the character escaped with a very good probability of survival, he/she is now in a far better position to ultimately end this evil. They could come back fit and armed, join up with the story's resistance group, etc.

Basically, my comment and suggestion is that, in this ending I definitely consider this a "won" game. The text indicates that it isn't and this is confusing. If the game continued for one more round, say a luck roll about finding a healer, then either a death paragraph, or a paragraph saying the character lived to fight another day - would make the ending clearer and more satisfying.

But thanks for doing this. It's great! I'm tired of rpg "solo" games that are only video games about picking up power-up items, buying and selling these in "stores", etc. with hardly any story to it all.
Some fair points there, thanks very much. There is a better ending than the one you've reached, and as I said above you'll know when you get there because it will say CONGRATULATIONS.

Nightmare Keep is an underrated FF title - nice to see something set in its universe!

4th time lucky!

I wonder what would have happened if I cracked and told them everything, though.

Well there is a good ending, though to be honest I don't particularly like the lack of interaction here, it seems for most of the book your sitting around getting tortured with no other choice at all, and the descriptions of the tortures seemed to become quicker and less atmospheric as time went on as though the author were running out of steam, which also made the plot feel like something of an afterthought.

I don't mind the theme of torture, but without the interaction the torture seemed to serve less purpose, plus with the entire book being made up of pretty much none stop torture I got to the point where it no longer became shocking and darkly atmospheric to the point where it sort of became ludicrously funny, like a sort of written version of Mortal Kombat fatalities or the Black Knight fight from monty Python and the Holy graille.

I do hope the author writes more gamebooks, as she obviously has an eye for atmospheric detail (the starting paragraph with the nightmare in the cell and the first session where you see a villager tortured definitely hooked my attention), however next time a bit more suspense and choice and a bit less none stop gore might be an improvement.

Of course, I don't know if things improve if you read nightmare keep, as I've not read that gamebook myself,so to me the plot didn't ring any bells or similar.

slightly graphic and a little confusing, maybe I'll get it on the second try.

Glad you enjoyed the gore. I am working on a trilogy. Unfortunately, it's not FF. All in range of 400 to 500. Hopefully to be published next year. Wrote a few more FF stories, will get them here as soon as they're ready.

My thanks to the webmaster. :)

It actually made me feel a bit ill, and I consider that a compliment.

In this game I made 8 willing choices and 7 checks on willpower, luck, skill etc.
I think that Tammy is extremely talented for descriptions, but that this game is too much dice rolling and not enough wit
I'm sure you can set this balance right with minor effort.
