I just found this site a couple of days ago, and it is awesome. Thanks for the great work. However, I am having issues with lair of the troglodytes. (I do really enjoy the concept of playing a weaker race). There is actually no way to beat LoT. I have gone through it multiple times, and chosen every possible different option, even to the point of mapping out the path the story takes in a flow chart style. Basically it doesn't matter what you do, the story ends with you getting thrown into the crypt, then killed by the human, or the chief. This is really annoying, because as I said before I really like this concept. Is there something I am just missing?

Update to my last post.
I have now found the golden spear, although its a little odd that unless you take the specific right path, nothing you do will enable you to win. However, I never got the option of fighting vurg, it made me give him the spear, I never got the option to keep it for myself.
(I know this is an option, because I downloaded the gamebook, so I could hunt through and see if I could find what i missed).

Zaltais, glad you're enjoying Lair of the Troglodytes. As well as the spear, you also need:
the gourd, which you get in a pit near the Guard room, by running down a passage away from the guard. Take this gourd to the hag, who will identify it for you, and use it as soon as you enter the big room, before you fight the adventurer.

Thank you for that Andrew.
And yes I really enjoyed Lair of the Troglodytes, my only wish is that it were bigger. Maybe exploring the crypts, or the outside world. But then again a lone trog wouldn't last long in those environs i spose.

In Lair Of The Troglodytes, are there 2 endings? I've got the one where
You become a hero for facing the adventurer, but I feel like I'm missing something. I can't find the magic spear, is that neccesary for the other ending?
Andrew Wright Sun Aug 10 02:00:49 2008
Duffmeister, if you're still stuck getting to the other, best ending for Lair of the Troglodytes:
to get the magic spear you need to give two copper nuggets to the hag, and then explore a bit.

Sorry Andrew, I found the other LotT ending, I
Used the consecrated mushrooms, then picked up the spear
a little prior to you writing that. Thanks anyway.

hello, I need help on trog. I get to the big rom, butI can't kill the guy in there. Can anyone give me a hint?
Andrew Wright Tue Jul 7 23:56:45 2009
If you're in the Big Room and fighting the Adventurer, you need a:
Growth Potion at least. Try and find a way to the Dark Places to get it.
darg Thu Jul 30 18:40:27 2009
andy, I canot find a groth potion
Andrew Wright Sat Aug 1 05:30:41 2009
to get the Growth Potion
go to the Guard Room, run away down a corridor, fall into a pit, get a gourd
take the gourd to the Hag. Click on use Gourd as soon as you meet the Hag. Presto! Growth Potion!
BTW: Andrew: these are all fan-made adventures not official ones.

How do you get two copper nuggets in Lair Of The Troglodytes?
Andrew Wright Mon Apr 30 00:03:41 2012
To get 2 copper nuggets in Lair of the Troglodytes you have to
Visit Badduz the Brewer at the start and drink 2 cups of Spleen Eleven. When you wake up, go immediately to the Fungus Gardens.
Hope that helps!

This was boring!
Very good, fun perspective! Wed Dec 31 02:24:32 2014
The adventurer maybe could be like 5% weaker so that you atleast have that crapshoot chance of winning haha.
You do have an outside chance of beating the adventurer anyway, but there is a way to tip the odds firmly in your favour.

A fun little adventure! I like these short, focused stories, they're a nice contrast to the more involved ones once in a while.

The main thing that make or break you in this game is pretty much the one random encounter you have in the "dark place",
because the winning path involves you fighting with a -2 SKILL penalty there so if you run into a SKILL 4 monster your chances are pretty bad (since it takes only 3 hits to kill you). Even if you survive that fight, if you get badly wounded then even the Growth Potion may not be able to save you from the adventurer later.

Is there a way to win this game?
joel Fri Jun 17 14:12:06 2016

I'm only 5/5 and he is 10/16/3...
How does that make any sense...

That was quite original and interesting.

Well written! Felt immersed in the troglodyte society. The ending was a bit unexpected, but welcome and definitely makes sense. Would recommend. A rather unique experience. :)

My one disappointment was that:
There is not more that happens if you get lucky enough to find the ring in the Well. It's especially sad that if you take the correct path, you miss the Well altogether!

For a short gameplay, this was actually rather annoying. The bottleneck requiring an exact set of choices was bad. The battles could have been better balanced too. This felt resplendent of The Black Lobster, but with much less engagement. Playing an irregular character was nice though. 85/100
