Gamebook Removed

I've deleted Kekataag's Quest For The Ebony Wand from the downloads page at the author's request.

Devil's Flight

The latest gamebook for online play is this 300-reference space-horror by Gaetano Abbondanza.

You are an Astro-Geologist; as such the determination of whether a newly discovered planetary body could hold permanent human settlements is dependent upon your professional opinion. You enjoy the work; it is interesting and stimulating if somewhat lonely. Today, however, will be unlike any other day you've ever experienced...

Two more gamebooks added to the Downloads page - later than I intended, but they are here now.

The Ravages Of Fate by Ulysses Ai. Note that this is the unedited version (the Windhammer entry was reduced in size to comply with the competition rules).

Golem Gauntlet by Simon Christopher Chapman.

New Gamebooks

I've just added two more gamebooks by Tammy Badowski to the downloads page. They are The Loyal Servant and The Sleeping Dragon. Both use Fighting Fantasy rules and settings.

Best Endings

As it isn't always obvious from the text whether you've reached the true conclusion of a gamebook, I've added a 'congratulations' message to make it clear when you have. I should have done this years ago admittedly.

Note that Above The Waves, The Black Lobster and Sharkbait's Revenge each have two best endings, all the others have just one.

Return To G15-275

We care about you, no matter how insignificant you are…

But the Galactic Disposable Cutlery Corporation is not as benevolent as its marketing department would have you believe. It has made you a prisoner by means that are entirely legal but really, really unfair! Can you escape from the clutches of the company that claims to own you? It won't be easy... if only you were a real person...

Yes, the seventh, and comfortably the largest so far, episode of Ulysses Ai's Wrong Way Go Back series is finally ready for online play.

Difficulty

I've made the following changes to make some of the gamebooks a little easier :

Hellfire - you now start on SKILL 10-12, STAMINA 19-24, LUCK 10-12.
Outsider! - you now start on SKILL 10-12.
Rebels Of The Dark Chasms - you now start on SKILL 9-11, and the river of lava can be negotiated with a single SKILL test.

Small Screen Version

I've been starting to make a version of the site optimised for small screens (such as smartphones). Here it is, as it stands : http://www.ffproject.com/small. It seems to work reasonably well on the devices I've tried it on, which are a Kindle Fire and a Samsung phone with a 2x3 inch screen.

If anyone has the time to try it, I would be interested in any feedback. Or indeed, any opinions as to whether this is worth pursuing at all.

GeoGities Web Archive Project

From http://geocities.ws/archive :

GeoCities was an important outlet for personal expression on the Web for almost 15 years, but was discontinued on October 26, 2009. On July 2009 Yahoo! Inc. announced that the popular free hosting service Yahoo! GeoCities was closing down. On October 26th all the existing web pages were finally deleted from Yahoo's servers. Since then, we have been working hard to recover hundreds of thousands of sites and we keep on working on the task of recovering as much of the History of the Internet as we possibly can.

As a result, a couple of ancient FF websites have been (admittedly imperfectly) resurrected. They are :

http://www.geocities.ws/FFbooks - Yaztromo's Tales Of Yore
http://www.geocities.ws/amylaseff - Amylase

Highlights of these include Nathan Page's gamebooks, the article about the Legend Of Zagor board game and the Bloodbones Dossier.

A Knight's Trial

I've added another gamebook to play: A Knight's Trial by Kieran Coghlan. It was an entry in the 2012 Windhammer competition and was in my opinion very unlucky not to end up with at least a Merit award.

With the assistance of the wise wizard Merlin and the dashing Knights of the Round Table, Arthur has ushered in a golden age where all are looked after and causes to complain are few. And now, you have been selected by the wizard himself to undergo a trial; a trial that will decide if you are worthy to join the ranks of the legendary knights!

Note that the original used a proprietary set of rules, I have adapted it to FF because that's easier from my perspective.

I've sorted out the guestbook messages. Now each gamebook has a specific Comments page. It is like having a separate guestbook for each, though all messages for all gamebooks are still aggregated at this page as before.

Note, too, that you are now presented with a comment form at each 'game over'. Addressing in particular all those who visit, play the games and never say anything : please use it.

As a wise man once said : if no one cares then I won't.

Sharkbait Revisited

Anyone who read the original text of Sharkbait's Revenge may remember that at the conclusion of the adventure, Stuart Lloyd posed several extra challenges. They included the 'Gandhi' challenge, the 'skin of your teeth' challenge, the 'rich' challenge and the 'warrior' challenge. Originally they were not included in the online version - but now they are, with the exception of the 'you make your own luck in this game' challenge which doesn't make sense following the adaption to FF rules.

You initiate the challenges by reaching one of the two good endings in the usual way. Then, following the CONGRATULATIONS message you are presented with an ADDITIONAL CHALLENGES link. Click on this and you go back to the start of the game, but you now have a checklist of challenges to work your way through. It doesn't matter if you die on any subsequent attempt, you can keep going round and round until you are successful.

Should you complete all the challenges, then make sure to post a message to boast about your accomplishment (using the form presented immediately afterwards). It will have a unique icon when displayed in the guestbook - not a spectacular thing, simply an indication that you are a better person than anybody who hasn't achieved this.

Nye's Song

Robert Douglas' gamebook is now ready for online play. This is an uncharacteristically short work (because it was written for the Windhammer competition) with a dark post apocalyptic setting based on an alternative version of history.

In 1757, British victory at Plassey wrought a cataclysm upon the world and mankind came close to extinction. However, even Kali - dark goddess of death - was confounded by such stoic resistance. The year is now 1905. YOU play Captain William Nye of the Warwick garrison - a disgruntled veteran about to embark on his next mission...

Soul Tracker Paragraph Headings

As written, Soul Tracker did not have the standard system of paragraph numbering. Instead, each reference had a word that in some way corresponded to its contents, for example MOON: 3 or ZEPHYR: 1.

When I made the online adaptation, it wasn't feasible to accommodate this. Since then, the software has moved on and now - for maximum artistic effect - the original paragraph headings have been restored.

The Ravages Of Fate

Where the Empire's justice cannot prove guilt or innocence the matter is left in the hands of the gods; or better said: at the claws of a troll. Likewise, those whose guilt is certain are sent, for both may win freedom by venturing into the forsaken lands beyond The Jaw and returning with one token of vindication and absolution: the head of a troll.

The fortieth online gamebook is now ready to play. It's the 'unedited' version of Ulysses Ai's 2012 Windhammer competition entry.

Isle Of The Cyclops Again

A few weeks back, I introduced the 'additional challenge' mechanism to Sharkbait's Revenge. This has been met with almost no enthusiasm at all : I think only one person worked their way through them, and by dubious means as it turned out. Nonetheless I intend to persist with this concept. Now Andrew Wright's Isle Of The Cyclops has it as well.

To recap : you initiate the challenges by completing the gamebook in the usual way.

Play it here
