Hi all! Thanks for the extra books. They're great. I'm writing a blog - my musings on writing a gamebook. Check it out and leave feedback.

I would like to extend an invitation to everyone on the guestbook to join a new Chronicles of Arborell yahoo group that I have started. The group has two particular points of interest. The first is as a news and discussion point for the Chronicles of Arborell, a gamebook series of great interest to myself, and secondly as a meeting place for authors and readers interested in digitally based gamebook titles and the possibilities developing for gamebook authors with the emergence of hand-held digital devices such as the ipod and iphone.

There is a wealth of great gamebooks to be found here and it would be exciting to have some of the talent that created them participating in the discussions to come at the group.

The group name is chroniclesofarborell and the url is: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/chroniclesofarborell/

I hope to see you there.

As a final word I would also like to remind anyone intending to vote in this year's Windhammer Prize that voting closes on the 30th of October.

Regards
Wayne Densley

Hi all,

For those of you who don't know about Destiny Quest (http://www.destiny-quest.com/), it is a great gamebook that you should buy and enjoy.

For those of you who are lucky enough to have read Destiny Quest, there is some good news hinting at more Destiny Quest in the future http://virtualfantasies.blogspot.com/2011/07/somethings-up-in-land-of-destiny-quest.html.

This is way off topic, except that it has prevented me from working on my gamebooks, so there is a connection there.
I have created a webcomic called Temporal Horizon which you can find at: http://www.temporal-horizon.com
If you enjoy it, tell your friends...

Hi.
A while ago I was having a discussion with a mad person on
audiogames.net calling himself Aprone, about the difficulties
of creating a gamebook with numbered sections to turn to
when you suffer from a lack of eyeballs and cannot therefore
use things like spider diagrams.
With his usual ludicrous speed, Aprone came up with the
solution, a program named Darkgrue, ---- somehoe because
of me ;d.
Darkgrue will let you create a number of standard text files
to be the sections of your book, linked by choices which
each lead to another section. You can use the arrow keys to
navigate around the pages, and do some clever things like
copy and paste different choices or create a separate title
for each section.
With all the navigation taken care of, you are then free to
use your imagination to open each file in notepad and come
up with the actual book text.
the program is self voicing, but also contains textual
information, so probably would be of interest to any potential
gamebook authors, as it could be a very useful tool.
I began a humerous test adventure with darkgrue basically
to test out the program. Being a simple game, it was to have
no dice rolling, and just feature choices based on the odd
item. As is often the case though, what was intended to be
a comedy litle romp through a dungeon grew into a 90 odd
section monstrosity with cast of monsters, puzles and
generalized insanity!
So here it is:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/8vq939
For more about darkgrue, please go to Jeremy kaldobsky,
aka Aprone's site on
http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/
Hope people enjoy the insanity of the book, and also get
some fun out of darkgrue.
I do have plans (and have already started writing), for a far
more serious book next, which will also feature a unique
stats system including combat and character attributes, and
will be set in it's own rather distinct world.
stil, I hope people have fun with dungeons.
if you get stuck, please look in the readme for some general
hints, and if your extremely stuck, i'm willing to answer
questions, though I hope the puzles are all doable.
All the best,
dark.

Hi Ulysses,

Your Temporal Bend was a curious blend of philosophy and humour. I enjoyed reading it!

As regards to the 'Is a ship still a ship when it's aground?' -yes, the only thing lacking is water directly beneath; practically speaking, a complete ship with full sails is useless unless it has something to float on.

Zharradan Marr's ship flies using magic (so that doesn't count in my arguement), as does Banedon's ship - unless both lost their magical ability; then they suddenly become as any other ordinary ship...smashed asunder by the sudden drop!

If the crew are children - or adults in practice - using their imagination as if on the ocean, is another possibility.

A ship is still a ship - but needs wind-power, man-power, or fuel by which to operate. Non-existence of the latter doesn't cancel out the former, only its current purpose.

If a ship sinks to the bottom of the ocean, it becomes a ship-wreck

Hi, just wanted to say I love the stories and what you're doing. thanks to everyone who is involved.

About a year ago I got inspired to create a tablet and smartphone gamebook with magic card combat elements. The project has been progressing since then and I've completed most of the coding and graphics. Next step is doing the music and the story writing. I have a music studio, but I'm not much of a writer so I am looking for someone to collaborate with, a writer for hire. If anyone is interested please get in touch.. and any feedback is appreciated.

you can see the project here http://www.atticsquad.com/games

Stuart- very nice! Thanks to you and Andy for starting this project.

One comment- it strikes me as a little curious to give an equally weighted rating to a game's illustrations, given that many of the the amateur gamebooks don't have any. In other words, a 'perfectly' written gamebook with no illustrations would achieve a maximum rating of only 20/25 on your system. I think this may give a false impression to someone skimming through the scores.

Good point Gaetano. I in the TIGER review system was initially going to stand for Immersion (which includes illustrations, atmosphere, extras, anything that contributes to the gamebook experience), but I changed it at the last moment. Maybe in future we'll use Illustrations for published gamebooks and Immersion for amateur gamebooks. cheers Andy

New Lone Tiger gamebook review - Stormin' Sonic by Jonathan Green and Marc Gascoigne

http://lonetigerreviews.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/stormin-sonic-by-marc-gascoigne-and.html

There are parallels to be drawn between this book and a Jonathan Green Fighting fantasy book.
