Can someone give me a hint as to which item I need to solve the middle path in midnight deep? I know it was somewhere in one of the earlier pages, but really don't want to spend all the time it would take to find it.

Alright, you can disregard my earlier post. I've figured out what it was, but must say that I think balance and evil should have been reversed.

@Ulysses: I can't wait! Actually, I lie: yes of course I can wait, and please take your time to perfect it to your complete satisfaction. Still, I must say: I can't wait!

@O H: Sorry I didn't see your message before. Which part exactly of Midnight Deep is giving you trouble? You can click on "spoiler" to write invisible text, and explain the part of the story you can't overcome in more detail. In particular:

I am having trouble getting through the three doors after entering the ruins. I do not seem to be getting any of the tokens that I need to pass.

@O H:

There are a couple of things you need to do to get past this point. Let me give you an example of one way to proceed. Just tell me if you're still having trouble and I'll provide some more details, but remember it is always the most fun to work these things out on your own.

While climbing the Greyspires, around about the time of shaking a Tiemuraz supporter with a rockslide from pursuing, my skill was set to a value of zero, making the next fight impossible. Frustrating, as it took about 6 attempts to get that far.
Thanks for pointing this bug out, sorry for the inconvenience. I've now fixed it. You can resume your game here.

Far too many different results, not enough explanations. The sAme paths produce different results. An impossible story that is simply confusing and I'll defined. No win is possible due to a lack of understanding in the story. What has to be done is not explained nor can it be worked out. Do not play at the cost of hours of wasted time

When posing riddles in the game, they must be answerable. The riddle posed by the dood halfway through cannot be answered without prior knowledge of the system. All riddles have logical thought processes attached to them. This on does not explain the days of the year, nor the months yet the reader is expected to know them.....how??? The read is also expected to randomly work out the growth rate...again, how?? There is also a logic fail in the question which doesn't work. The reader is told that the lilies grow every year however when you investigate the riddle it is apparent that the riddles cannot grow every year and only bi annually. It is also eternally frustrating when there is only 1 and 1 path only you can follow or you will die without any chance at all.....because that's so realistic

Died: "To walk upon this path, you must possess the tokens of balance, whose significance only Lord Logaan the Trickster may fathom."

But I've got the Steel Cube in my inventory.

Is this a bug? What, I need other stuff? I wasn't left a lot of time to explore...
You do need the cube, but you need another item as well.

Early on you make a choice between three doors - light, misty or black - and receive either an ankh, a steel cube or a bird's skull. This commits you to a particular choice of door at Shadnezzar, but you also need to have found something else along the way. It's a different item for each of the three paths :

Man, I hate it when I die in some random 1v1 fight, because of bad dice rolls. :P Oh well, I really enjoyed the story (as far as I got) and will definitely play this again until I reach the end.

Engaging story line, variety of paths, beginning skill choice that can be important later on. This is amazing. The skill with which important items and clues are scattered is impressive. Due to the length and high number of paths and items, I'm not sure if I improbably managed to stumble across the one correct path, or one of several. Good job. This was awesome. 99/100

The download claims that one of the faction choices grants a bonus to Skill, which did not happen in the electronic version.

Wielding a Pike does not appear to impede combat rolls after the first few fights (and impales from time to time anyway).

I noticed that the link on the first page of this adventure (the one that takes you to a kind of gazetteer of Shabak http://www.fightingfantasy.org.uk/ShabakRealms.htm) doesn't work anymore.
Is there any way to re-instate it? it would be sad to lose that nice stuff.
Maybe the author can be contacted and the same information can be made available in some other way?
I don't know if it exists outside of archive.org any more. I had already changed the link on the links page to point to the archived version, now I have updated the one on the first page of the adventure as well.

Enjoyed this, but still wish this could have had 3 different successful endings in accordance with the 3 alignment paths that you can choose in the beginning.

There's always an interesting sense of history when you comment on an online work that is now two decades old.

When I first saw the title, I kept thinking of Midnight Special. Then I actually read the background and the first ref, and with a sigh, I realized this was going to be the Eragon of Fighting Fantasy Project. Unfortunately, my suspicions were proven correct later down the line as well, since several key plot beats are very obviously taken from far more famous works, with the kind of chutzpah most closely associated with Eragon. The internal narrative logic avoids some contradictions as glaring as in certain other gamebooks (i.e. ) but is hardly free of them.

END SPOILER

For all that, I must say that the descriptions are good, and the final stretches are genuinely tense, which relatively few gamebooks manage to do. As long as you stick to the intended path, the writing is usually quite effective - and by intended path, I mean the route of Good, since there is just no real narrative logic to having the Good goddess speak directly to you, then pick one of the other two and THEN, if you succeed in stumbling onto the path they need, STILL undertake the trial as the Champion of Good. (For that matter, it feels like there's little narrative logic in the answer you must pick right before reaching the room of the final confrontation as well - it feels lifted out of a completely different kind of story.)

It's obvious that the Good route got by far the most attention and the encounters there are genuinely pretty impressive. You also get to fight with the Pike there, which might be the coolest weapon I have seen in these gamebooks. (Perhaps it is cool, even, as it doesn't actually seem to subtract 1 from your Skill.) Certainly much better than the mace (which I hoped would at least be of use vs. the stone war machine, but to no avail) or the battle axe. I gave up on searching for the Neutral token after finding out that you'll be the Champion of Good no matter what, but the evil path is obviously an afterthought. That whole double choice of doors is at best a bow towards conventions and at worst there to pad out the number of references.

Some other notes.

Now, proofreading. I must note that this gamebook has a strange tendency not to use any periods or commas at the end of any quotations. I checked some other gamebooks, and this seems to be the only one like that. The next set is only about the missing punctuation.

3

"We'll starve, soon" + "don't know how much longer Varna has left" + " out of sight of the gates" + "maybe together you can do something"

19

"while I work" + he'd not have tolerated this" + "I hope you enjoy the bracelet. (missing quotation mark.)

44

"they attack our engineers" + " no escape by sea either" + "you need some sleep" + "in your errand"

46

"It's free" he tells you + "everybody indoors"

49

"Champion of Evil/Good/Neutrality" + "be upon each of you" (punctuation for all)

55
"Glantanka's rays"

90
"to destroy him"

111
"nothing to you"

118
"just stay and chat"

124
"the Champion of Good" + " for The Test" + "the Sword of Dusk" + "blessings upon another"

126
"out of the path of the onrush of mud."

128

to this place" + "if so I chose" + "Take this"

144

"You will need it" she whispers

170
"I am sorry"

199

"of the Good within" + "the symbol of healing and fertility"

201
"Let the child in, Osvaldo" + "looking for a handout"

208
"the Sword of Dusk" + "three Blades" + "able to proceed" + "unless your need is great" + "they did not" + "for himself" + "in fact" + "will be destroyed"

212
"and ourselves"

289

"or as good as" + " a gift suitable to a defender" + "by the might of Kulak himself" + "a friend here in Varna"

305
"yet never forgotten"

318

"this way"

364

"thank Kulak" + the harbour side district"

365

"not without alerting the entire horde" + "some other gap in the wall" + "you will be successful"

368
""Looks tough for a refugee" one remarks.

373

"call on the mercy of Vanyr"

389
"your fate"

393
"until he is dead"

399
"he who serves himself"

400
"brave warrior" + "awaits you"

401
"I only hope I have taught you enough" (both subsequent quotations in that ref as well)

468

"to them" a man mutters

One last thing: in 40 (and the previous ref), there is no check in case you have no gold on you whatsoever. They also do not bother with the Gold Brooch, though if you already went on this path, the Brooch appears useless anyway?
It doesn't really make any difference, but I changed it so that it now takes account of you having no gold. It's reasonable to infer from context: "Your money or your life" that the robbers are only after gold pieces, not all gold items in general, so the brooch doesn't need to be an issue.
