Hi there, Glad you guys are enjoying Garden of Bones what I wrote. All feedback (good, bad and indifferent) gratefully received. Am a newbie to this website, but a Fighting Fantasy freak since way back. Hoping for a Sunday to myself soon when I can plough through some more of these adventures. Cheers.
I thought it wasn't too bad. The beginning was so hollywood that I was a little concerned, but as I played I found it quite well-written with high plot integrity. I happened to luck on the correct route the very first time I played it, and enjoyed the ending.
The only criticism I have is that it is so short it didn't really seem like the sort of challenge that could have defeated so many adventurers for so many years previously. A sub-criticism is that:
SPOILER
Lucius the Necromancer was built up as the villain, then after you dispose of him, there is another one added like an afterthought.
I see... I think I know what you are having trouble with and the partial answer is:
SPOILER
If you are dying when you meet the queen without being able to fight her, it is because you do not have the functioning weapon required. If you have this weapon and it is functioning, then she will fight you. You don't need to take the tortoise route, that's just a second chance. When you get the weapon in question, you are told that it doesn't work...yet

Ulysses, no matter what route i take, i keep getting instant death when i go up to the palace. i have gone through the imprisonment route, found out what the queen doesn't like and met the shrivelled up man, i've gone down the tortoise route, found the things i thought i needed and ended up getting instant death too...
it's a great story and makes me laugh, just wish i had some clues on which route is advisable...
Anyone know how to survive the planet of the spiders. keep getting instant death whatever i do. great book mind, love the dark humour and the pointlessness of it all...
|Hi. I have recently found this site and have had a go at all the games on it and am now hooked. I am now working through the list and am stuck on hellfire. The furthest I get is to a door that requires a password which i paid for but doesn't work on the door. am i doing something wrong or is this the wrong door/password, or are there more doors than one that need a password. A seperate question, I keep collecting a lot of random objects, my assumption is that these can be used on various monsters, firstly is this assumption correct, and secondly is there a way of knowing what to use on who or is it a matter of guess work. Sorry for a long post. I am very impressed with this site and the work put into it. Keep it up. Richard
Melric and Raitharve are two characters I made up. Way back in the dawn of time when I discovered FF on the web in 97 or 98, I decided a write an adventure where you play a swordswoman - Raitharve - investigating a crypt full of horrors in the company of a more experienced adventurer - Melric Moonblade.
However, I switched ideas and ended up writing about the Troglodytes who live in the crypt itself. Thanks for the encouragement though, as I have still have further plans for those two and anything could happen in the future!
Alec Worley's gamebook is now ready for online play.
Legend has it that whenever the full moon shines upon the Garden of Bones its gates creak open once more. Though the undead remain trapped inside, it is possible for the living to enter their shadow realm. Many an adventurer has entered the Garden in search of the fabled Scythe of Morbius Kane. None have returned - at least none alive.
Arguth, Melric and Ritharve are not the only recurring characters in the Andrew Wright books. I won't give anything away, but a certain character from the Black Lobster also turns up in 'Isle of the Cyclops'. I like the way that each story has links to the others without the books simply being a'series; of successive adventures, since I feel the continuity of the books makes for a much more interesting idea
Andrew Wright, you write very well, I especially liked The Lair of the Troglodytes. Now there are 2 characters that keep coming up in your script. Melric and Ritharve. Are they 2 characters you made up, or are they genuinely characters from the Fighting Fantasy world that are hidden away in one of the books? Either way I'd like to buy a book where those two would feature.
Hi Ulysses. I wanted to see your version of damage and armor bonuses as an example of game balance. The Diamond key impressed me much. I even tried to play it with a couple of friends - and we came to conclusion that armor wasn't really worth buying. But playing online version I died couple of times fighting Griffon guards with dagger - and found that armor was improved. Are you planning of making final version of Diamond Key available for downloading and offline playing? :)
The values for weapons were modified, but those that appear now in the online version are the final values. If you really want the list of values for some reason I can post them here, but not tonight because it's already tomorrow morning.
