I have a question about Outsider! (which is absolutely fantastic by the way)
SPOILER
Is reference 977 the best ending possible? I've managed to obtain several endings so far, but this seems to be the most likely candidate for the "best"...
Oh and almost forgot Curse of Drumer. Loved the atmosphere and the story in it. The word 'bonnie' that they kept saying confused me for a while though. Was that real 80's slang?
Alright, thanks ulysses! Guess I'm goin item hunting then :-( . Loving the series so far, very interesting protagonist with his own "reasons" to be a hero. If I'm stuck now, i don't want to think about what the Hypertrout Will be like! I've heard scary things about that book's difficulty :-(
It's no spoiler to say that in normal circumstances the Spider Queen will defeat you easily. The solution to this is to increase your own abilities, or to diminish hers, or both...
To increase your ability:
SPOILER
Throughout the adventure you can find a number of datasticks that can be used in the virtual reality suite. One of these provides training in the use of electrowhips. From memory it was a blue datastick.
END SPOILER
To hinder the Spider Queen:
SPOILER
She HATES country and western music. You need to obtain an object that will allow you to provide a soundtrack for the battle.
Hey guys! I've just decided to try and play the whole Wrong Way Go Back series from start to finish with one character. On Planet Of The Spiders now and having trouble with the queen.
SPOILER
I have the functional electrowhip for the fight but she keeps defeating me! I found the drink to raise my skill, but i can still only get it to 11. How can i win this fight?
@Ulysses: I just ran a character from WWGB to CO using your 'Continue' and 'bookmark' suggestions. I bookmarked the beginning of each new book and reloaded there if I died; although, knowing already some very reliable routes through each book, I don't remember if I died more than once or twice.
I did manage to get all three commendations in Hypertrout this time through. It was *A LOT* more tricky this way, but in the end more rewarding.
I did already play through CO. I found the navigation to be confusing enough for it to be the first book in the series that I mapped out completely. There was one thing which I was stuck on for a long time:
SPOILER
The door in the centre of the robot. I kept blowing him up with the rocket launcher and then using the room as an infinite luck-restoring well. I was also stuck on the Palkasian Spirits for a little while, before I realised that (as per usual) it DOES MATTER what order the dialogue options are chosen in.
END SPOILER
Well, I'm going to have fun checking out the rest of Dead World and seeing what nifty things I can do in C.O. that I couldn't before. Thanks again for the fantastic gamebooks!
The Dead World is a little different in that there is a lot of content in every direction. You do have to make sure you escape the planet, but apart from that it's all about what bonuses you want to get. But whichever you chose, at all leads to the one successful ending.
Make sure you use the "Continue" link at the end of each episode rather than selecting from the menu.
@Ulysses: Well, I just finished Dead World, obtaining the last entry. But I feel as though I missed a huge amount of content so I'm going to replay it again.
I'm also going to replay the whole series with just one character from the beginning. I wasn't "saving" in-between adventures and there are certainly lots of things I missed out on.
Thank you again for the fantastic gamebooks. They really are very enjoyable!
I painstakingly leveled up my enseign, with advanced electro-whip training, stat bonuses and all the best loot (including the Star of Cha-Ching), then moved jobs. Forgetting to send myself the HTML Code, my character is now lost to me forever. A cautionary tale.
When you play the WWGB gamebooks end to end you get to keep the same character, meaning bonuses you achieve can stack up. In most adventures you get a choice of increasing SKILL, STAMINA or LUCK, and so depending on what you want/need some paths are better than others. Likewise with the different training available for weapons. In terms of story content, if there are multiple endings, the best one is always the last passage in the book, so if the reference number isn't the highest you've seen, it's not the best ending.
I don't know if anyone has made it all the way through in one playing, but you can 'save' your character by bookmarking the start of each adventure. Then if you die you can go back to the bookmark and try again.
Indeed I did not do that. That's something I've always wondered. Sometimes it is obvious that the ending is not 'optimal' and there is 'more to do'. But sometimes this is very hard to ascertain. Do you have "perfect paths" or even your own "preferred route" for the gamebooks online somewhere? It would certainly be interesting to compare!
Another question: have you ever taken one character through from the first book to the last (that currently exists) without 'dying' somewhere? This seems like a great challenge :).
Many of the gamebooks have multiple endings. The Hypertrout is not really difficult to complete, but there are at least 3 successful endings that I can remember. To get the best ending:
It must have been a fluke, but I just finished Hypertrout on my third playthrough. I didn't even have to plan or map or anything (unlike the Plane of the Spiders and The Golden Crate!)
My route was approximately:
SPOILER
Do something drastic, get a knife from the kitchen, go to the library get the green tile, read the tile, go to the brain, wait for the anchovy, beat up the catfish, kill the goldfish, go back to the ship.
END SPOILER
Again I didn't map, so I can't be 100% sure. Now I feel like I've missed out on half the content!

Also bizzarely, if one has the (real) Golden Crate and a blaster with at least one shot, then one is allowed to shoot the Operations Assistant. If the Golden Crate is the fake then the option to shoot the Operations Assistant is not given.
