Hi Jason,
You make a fair point regarding the difficulty of gamebooks. It can prove frustrating getting killed for the twentieth time or so! However, I would say that part of a gamebook's charm is the variety of ways an adventurer can die. There was a time when fans went mad for what was termed 'death entries'. And there's also the challenge many gamebook readers enjoy. Well done for succeeding first try - but perseverance is another trait gained by determining the true path. Most of Jonathan Green's books, for example, are very hard!

I succeeded on the first try! I like that. They shouldn't write these things with the idea that their like video games. I mean, in the sense that you die a whole bunch of times before you figure it out. They should feel more like a table top rpg where character death means you never play that adventure again. I've never actually succeeded on the first try with a fighting fantasy gamebook before. This was a good horror adventure. I felt an enjoyable level of vicarious fear for my character. Very suspenseful! Just one question. What were the fear points for? I must have missed reading the rules regarding their use.

Well my very own House of Pain has 80,000 words - that's not a bad count!

@SCC,
That's exciting to hear! Are we allowed to know which part of the Old World? I'm still engrossed in writing Sean Calibre Book 2. Having said that, regrettably I won't be taking part in this year's Windhammer. I did have some possible ideas - but never mind, there's always next year!

On a lighter side-note, I recently watched 'The Living Daylights' and 'Licence to Kill', both are James Bond films convincingly portrayed by Timothy Dalton. I've just realized how good they actually are, with many twists and turns throughout the plot, and some enjoyable villains! It's a shame Dalton didn't make another couple of films as 007. Roger Moore also made a good bond, alongside the original portrayal by Sean Connery. After Dalton, the mantle had passed to Pierce Brosnan during the 90's, and finally to Daniel Craig's slightly dark-natured, ruthless Bond of the New Millennium. There were moments when both Dalton and Craig had that something in common. Even George Lazenby and David Niven each had a single crack at the role. I don't think there's been a bad Bond as such, although most fans do have a firm favourite. Some of the films can verge on the daft side at times, while Moore's humorous quips regarding a villain's demise became a little tiresome. For example, he judo-throws a villain into a vat of tar...."Oh James, what happened to him?" "He came to a sticky end, darling!" I've heard Daniel Craig is due to finish - I wonder: who will portray the next Bond?

Longest in terms of references obviously doesn't mean longest in terms of play length, of course. But the Diamond Key/Wrong Way series are very long with lots of replayability.

Just wondering if it's possible for the above online adventures to have atmospheric music like Tin Man FF Games?

How many references??? WOW! TCOD, POP, and SS each only have 400 (before editing), BZP measures 380. Relatively small in comparison to others on here.

@ Josh,
Not which are the longest gamebooks, Nye's Song and APIAS are only short forays (adapted from Windhammer format).

@ All,
There's an audio version of 'The Curse of Drumer' on Youtube for visually impaired gamers. It has been developed by Robert Kingett. While the robotic voice has limitations and not the most ideal narrative, it's quite an honour for it to be made more accessible. 'House of Horror' has also been played through; I believe there might be a recorded play-through of this also. Along with others perhaps.

Hello all,

What are the longest gamebooks that are playable online here?
The sizes are all shown here.

The longest individual gamebook is The Diamond Key at 1000 references. A Shadow In The North has 700 references and A Flame In The North and Return To G15-275 have 600.

If you count collections of gamebooks, then Tales From The Bird Islands has 925 references in total, and the Wrong Way Go Back series has 1409.

In The Footsteps Of A Hero
Hello again. I posted messages about continuing this adventure. Remember when I said I was writing another book? Well, it just so happens I'm intending to script Valiencis Monrowan right in it. Basically I'm re-writing and re-igniting the Arthurian legend while scripting Valiencis as the hero of the Battle of Badon Hill. I hope I can use Victor Cheng's character without copyrighting? I don't think I have to worry about copyrighting laws, as this adventure (In the Footsteps of a Hero) has never been published in printed book form. But I'd like to make sure. I hope Victor Cheng won't mind. Sergio Almeida.

Do you know I had to struggle recently to remember what Eddora's name actually was originally from back when she used to be a real person. I managed eventually of course but still. It's one of the reasons the sequel timelines have been revised up to 100 years later. Meanwhile I wonder if anyone could PhotoShop Zoe Kravitz to be a Dark Elf?

Interesting your comments about using luck in fights, the guys on Let's Play do get some mileage out of it.
