Voting in the 2012 Windhammer Prize has now closed.
Voting has closed for the 2012 Windhammer Prize and now the serious stuff begins. From now until the 7th of November I will be collating the votes and comments forwarded by readers and determining First Prize winner and Merit Award winners for 2012. This year has been a great year for the Windhammer Prize both in the number of entrants, and the huge interest that has been shown in their entries. I believe the number of votes and general comments received is a testament to the quality of the entries submitted.
As the voting period has now concluded please feel free to discuss the entries in any forum you wish.
All entrants will be notified by email of this year's winners on the 7th, with a general declaration through the usual channels shortly thereafter.
May Glory and Renown follow all who are successful.
Hi Guys, finished Crate and Trout. Great fun. You are correct about C. O.. Round and round we go. Found a robot that shoots body parts but m;ust have been to soon. What a puzzel! Walker
I actually had to draw a map for C.O., the place was so confusing. And, I may be wrong, but I believe it's possible to fail certain puzzles and miss key items, thus making the book impossible to finish, even though you don't die or get any kind of 'game over' sequence. Ulysses, could you clarify this? And Walker, did you get the Star of Cha-Ching in Hypertrout?
And Andre, I'll check out the site as soon as my laptop works again.

@ Andre,
I'll try to check out your site sometime but - as I've said in previous posts - I'm a bit tied up with my writing at the moment. However, I quite like the idea of fans contributing to a particular adventure, sounds a fun project! I wonder what kind of adventure we'll end up with...? If anything, it might seem a bit bizarre as a patchwork of various writing styles.
I might break off from Sean Calibre Book 2 to do another 'self-indulgent' interview concerning Nye's Song (now that I can talk about it) and posting it on FF Project and the Official Fighting Fantasy Website. Don't reckon I'll be posting on the Forum there, however, as I hardly got any replies to my topic ideas.
Yeah, i'm a bit unsure about the fans contributing to projects. The mixture of different ideas might not exactly be consistant with eachother. But it could work i guess. At least there'd never be any unfinished projects. And I agree, Bodies On The Docks is an awesome book! Just wish it was continued.
That's one of the reasons I love Wrong Way Go Back. It has one single, continueous storyline with plenty of humour. I'm sure chapter 7 will be awesome!
I may have gotten a commendation as when I replayed and replayed I think I saw a "Commendation" at the start of the new game. I don't remember receiveing it however. Sometimes the voice synth misses things. i have gotten the red card and the card workedto get the 1 tile. I got to the robot from the well and he shot all his body parts so, too soon. It is tough so I wrote notes to find how to get back to places but WoW, it is a maze in there. Walker
Yeah, to win C.O. you need to find 3 golden tiles. I can only remember how to get 2. And I'm pretty sure that they're all missable. Eg one part requires you enter an office and drug the person inside with Palkasian spirits. Walk in without the spirits and you cannot re enter, thus making the book un-finishable. I had to download the offline version and read that to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do and when to do it! Good luck with it.
And as for the Star of Cha-Ching, you get it by getting 3 commendations in Hypertrout. These commendations are earned by completing 3 tasks. These tasks are
SPOILER
warning your boss that the fish wish to hurt them, getting the keycard off the fish lady, and finally killing the Goldfish King.
END SPOILER
The star can be traded in C.O. to recharge the stealth device, but if you don't use it then, you keep it in the next book, so I imagine it will have some use later on in the series.
Notification of results for the 2012 Windhammer Prize
Arborell.com is proud to announce that the winner of the 2012 Windhammer Prize for Short Gamebook Fiction is Zachary Carango for his futuristic sci-fi adventure, Final Payment. Merit awards have also been awarded to Marty Runyon for his magical fantasy adventure, Academy of Magic - The First Term, and to Ashton Saylor for his exciting sci-fi adventure, Legacy of the Zendari. Well done to all participants and congratulations to this year's winners.
This year's competition has been particularly hard-fought. With 22 quality entries, more than 4000 visitors to the competition webpage over the voting period, and greater than 8500 downloads considered, it proved the most competitive of competitions in the history of the prize.
It is no small thing to ask entrants to write original gamebooks for the Windhammer Prize. This year the quality of the entries submitted has been exceptional. I would like to thank all readers who voted this year for their commitment in evaluating such an extensive entry list. Special thanks must also go to those who provided feedback for authors. The amount of comment forwarded has also been the largest given in any competition year and all is greatly appreciated.
All entries have now been placed into the Windhammer Prize gamebook archive and can be accessed from that page along with all other gamebooks submitted since 2008.

Honestly: do you believe gypsy folk would have been offended by Nye's Song? Erm...how on earth?
Without wishing to appear complaining, I would have preferred a bit more time to play through the entries to the Windhammer prize. I don't know about other people, but I don't have that much time to devote to playing gamebooks, and didn't manage to get through anywhere near them all before voting closed.
If I'm in the minority, then obviously I'll just live with it. As there are more entries every year, however, and the same time given to play them all, it seems likely that less people will be able to vote each year. It also means people may play just the ones higher up the list (as an easy way of keeping track of what is and isn't played), and then vote for their preference from these when they run out of time. Obviously that gives an unfair advantage to those higher up. Admittedly the results don't seem to suggest this, though.
As I say, if most other people did manage to play them, then never mind. But if there are a lot of people in my position, I'd appreciate it if you'd consider extending the voting period.
pi4t, I agree. I also thought the winning entry was fairly blah, but I suppose it comes down to personal tastes. I've never liked sci-fi in role-play, and to this day dislike the original Starship Traveller. It's all relative I suppose. If the 2012 entries were released in book form, the group's best seller might be an entry that didn't even win a prize in the original competition. Go figure.
