I was just reading a published gamebook, and a recurring letdown in many of the official FF books struck me again.
For those writing gamebooks I offer this tip: At the end, reward the reader, not just the character. Reading that the townsfolk are cheering my name and that I have received a chest of gold coins would be great if any of it was real, but after I close the book I have nothing. The best gamebooks bring the plot to a satisfying conclusion.
I've been thinking about 'Curse of the Mummy'. Being a lover of mythology, I wish to write something which, like 'CotM' has mythological elements. Which would be preferable? Set in a fantasy world with familiar mythology or in the real world (ie: Say i wanted greek mythology, should I set it somewhere on Titan resembling ancient greece, or in real ancient greece)?
What's happening with I am Zombie, the Nightmare castle prequels, the one about the locust swarm, the one with half-machine Queen Victoria, something about steam punks, and the one with an angel thrown out of heaven for smoking?
Um, yes, you've, er, come upon my big problem here. A while ago I put most of my 5,000,000,000 different projects on hold to focus on 'Rise of Skarlos' however, at the minute, I'm too busy to complete a full-length gamebook, so I'm considering a short one (The oneI mentioned) focused on mythology.
Just keep working on Rise of Skarlos with whatever time you have. Adding yet another gamebook to your pile of incomplete work is unlikely to be helpful. Or, if you really want to put something out, just use your time to polish up the first installment of I am Zombie and submit it to this site.
Actually, I supose you're wright. The 'Greek' thing was a sort of burst of enthusiasm. I'd actually forgotten about I am Zombie, and only read back through it today. At the time, i stopped writing it due tio writer's block, but now i feel a little amore inspired. While i recover from 'Rise of Skarlos' i think i'll finish part one of 'IaZ' off.
appologies for interupting, but I just thought people would be interested. the chronicals of arborell, --- who's link is actually in the links section, to celibrate the launch of their massive new reeddited versionf of the gamebook windhammer (well worth a look by the way), is running a gamebook writing competition.
anything around 100 sections will be acceptable, and anything upto about three years old. the winner will not only be hosted on the site, but will also get a cash prize of 100 australian dollars, though of course this isn't the main reason for submitting.
sinse there are some really great gamebook authors here, I thought people would be interested. you can read about the competition at http://www.arborell.com/windhammer_prize.html and I'd also highly recommend checking out the gamebooks and other resources there.
I'm really sorry if this looks like spam or shameless plugging, but it struck me there are some people here who probably want to know about this, ---- and besides, the new gamebook is great!
Anyone big on Lone Wolf here? I just got into them, sort of surprising given that I've liked FF for so much longer. I'm going for all the paperpacks. And yes, I'm aware they're available online anyway, but I prefer real books for my collection.
Lone Wolf is a great series. This is actually a great time to get into them, because they're being re-issued as "expanded" versions (brand new sections included that were not in the original editions).
Just a quick note to say I'm preparing an adventure to enter into Wayne's Windhammer competition that Dark mentioned above, and I'd encourage everyone here to do the same!
Im hving problems subbmitting my gamebook to you, when i click on contact it just takes me to my hotmail i sign in and nothing happens so i click on contact agin and it does the same thing.
Clicking on the link is supposed to cause your email software (Outlook / Thunderbird etc) to open up a new message addressed to the site - I take it you only use web based email? I'm reluctant to post the email address here unless I really have to as I don't want to receive any more spam, but if you right click on the contact link and select 'properties' it will be displayed (it's the part following the 'mailto:').
Given what you said before though, were you definitely trying to send it to me, or were you trying to submit it to the Windhammer competition?
