Autumn Moon is a 'blues maiden', she performs a variety of songs - including the divine melody - on her fiddle. Upon successful conclusion SPOILER: she dedicates her latest work to Captain William Nye, hence the title.
Fairly good overall. It was rather long, and the new missions compound some confusion. The gameplay was fun though, and the many decisions and opportunities were great. The availability of weapons was skewed, with very few close-combat compared to the number of such fights, and vica versa for guns. Well recommended though for the obvious effort that went into writing all the plot and background. Grade: 95.
Found an ending on Albatross Atoll. This game was slightly confusing and annoying at the beginning because of the necessary repetition, but this is the only down side. I was annoyed at the difficulty of mapping, but found it to be unnecessary. The different character options were a welcome change. Option and travel variety were great. If there are multiple endings, which is logical, good job on creating them. Grade: 99.
Great game. The battle was just tough enough to warrant repeat plays to win. The conclusion was slightly confusing at first, but proved to be a quality ending. Great job with game play and the choice of character at the beginning. I'm still not sure, because of how I played, what use the last two were, but still good. Grade: 97
Thanks for the comments bluejuice915. Some positive points, while others pointed out improvements. Some weapons provided a bonus but intended more as a superficial fun feature rather than drastically alter the gameplay. Not sure what you mean by 'new missions' however. Calibre did cross paths with several characters having their own agendas, such as that dealer in alien antiquities, Graeme Hammond, offering to help Calibre's progress in return for a favour. Apologies for the length, but one thing I didn't like about many of the published gamebooks (in particular the earlier ones) is that they seemed too rushed, the paragraphs too brief in content - there's always room for a bit of description, a bit more dialogue. Sometimes I like a bit of back-story to spice things up. I'm currently writing Sean Calibre Book 2 and, be warned, this will be even longer than its predecessor! But I'm hoping the content will have plenty of depth. Well done for completing it successfully!
This book is stupid. Yes, the plot starts out good, and it has good choices, but one things makes it awful, the skill tests. Yours are ok depending on how high you start out, but they are repeated far too frequently. The tests during the Kali-Cloak fight, and the fight itself, are absolutely absurd. The gunner's skill is 10, tested against 3 dice, giving success odds of 1/2. Each of the 5 KCs have skill of 8, tested against 2 dice, giving success odds of about .72. This is ridiculous. Given you lose if they score 12 hits against you, I have estimated your success odds to be less than 1/4. I'd like to see someone calculate them accurately since I lost at least 7 times. This had a lot of potential, but threw it away. I will not grade this like I do the other books.
There is a way to tip the battle in your favour. If you make the right choices early on you have a better than even chance of success.
??? Um, ok. That was good. The subtle hints towards the ending, and the downright reveal when you lose, is incredibly clever. The plot was good, as were the battles and choices. Needing to get the two specific items was slightly irksome, although it did force me to explore everywhere, which was good. Grade: 98
I hate trolls, and this one in particular! rofl It was a fun run though once again. Maybe one day I'll take him down :) thanks a heap for the fun times here. :D
'Slightly irksome'. If I'd done that my gamebook would have been ungraded. 'Exploring' is part of the gamebook, after all. Ian Livingstone's style has something like eight or nine essential items to find, Deathtrap Dungeon for example - considered an FF classic.
Hi, I tried my hand at pirating at Blackmaw for the first time (having run out of quests to do) and I encountered a bug (maybe more than one):
I did Storm Petral before that, and my Prince's Crew defeated the demon there. After that I went to Blackmaw and encountered a Pirate Galleon......and my Prince Crew was still there and was fighting Galleon in my ship's place!
Being a Strike 12 monster, the Pirate Galleon quickly defeated the crew, and then my own ship too.
I "reloaded" the game (I "saved" at the spot after I finished Storm Petral using Favourites) and tried pirating a second time, and again, the Prince's Crew was there. This time I encountered a much weaker Pleasure Schooner....except it was impossible to beat! The Prince's Crew was winning every round, but the Schooner's Strength just won't go down! It's a fight that's impossible to win and I was forced to quit.
So....possibly two separate bugs?
Thanks. I believe I've fixed the first one, will investigate the other as soon as possible.
Hello Andrew Wright. I've been hunting for your Deathtrap Dungeon 3. It was very good last time I remember erading it? How can I read it again? Willing to pay.
Great story. While having to find the correct path was annoying, as mentioned by others, the elaborate understory was genius. The fear level was slightly low for exploring and killed me several times, but proved to be fine for the right path. The battles were tough, but searching and mapping were pleasant. Good job, if tough and somewhat unlikeable for some people. Grade: 98
Pretty good. It ended unexpectedly quickly, but not before I had some good plays and deaths. The multiple character and skill options are always a refreshing change. Some more battles would be ok, but the play is pretty good as is. Grade: 96
This was an odd adventure, but realistic in the sense this is a beggar's tale. I would've liked to know more about the dreams he were having, were they his memories, distorted by time, or were they glimpses of the assassin's life? Thanks for your efforts on making this tale!
Extreme kudos on making a gamebook with such a controversial plot. It was quite entertaining, and the break from semi-cliched sci-fi plot was good. I typically like more battles, but the choices made up for that. I'm not sure if there are multiple endings, but I may well come back to look for them. The character option was nice too. Grade: 99
the one where Melchion is killed and you take his place.
END SPOILER
That's good enough for me. An all-decision book is OK, but I usually like having battles. Great job with what fairly little I found. Quality writing and genius plot. No criticism beyond battles. Grade: 99
