Reading through the list of names on the "downloads" page, I was struck by a preponderance of unwitting double-entendres, my two favourite being two books which should surely be in the same series: "The Quest for the Ebony Wand" and "Pit of Peril". This made me consider whether one of the defining characteristics of the Fighting Fantasy Series (as with the God-father of all sword and sorcery- Tolkein) is an amazingly coy attitude to sex. In these frequently gory and even gratuitously violent works, no mention was ever given to the motive force which presumably was responsible for Titan's population (although the illustations of "Vampyres" etc. were somewhat less inhibited).
To this effect, I have to praise the Diamond Key, which managed to be serious and avoid puerility whilst having some element of the erotic in the form of various semi-human lovelies (a theme that seems to resurface in the WWGB series frequently). In particular, strengthening your fire-balls has never been so enjoyable.
"Into the Valley of Halos", the third 25 ref FF microadventure in my Fighting Fan-Tales series is out now with the March Fighting Fantasy newsletter here:
You can use your character from the first two adventures in the saga - "In the Shade of the Pango Tree" or "Debacle at Dead Man's Inn" , or you can use the new character that comes with the adventure.

I just remembered that you can also: 7. Get the King's Champion to assist you 8. Going to the Serpent People's realm, you can also be joined to one of their females, which will give the fire and lightening scrolls greater power. 9. You can get Darm's wife to help you fight him if you are nice to her.
It's no secret that to defeat King Darm at the end you should be aquiring magical items to use against him. If I recall correctly, there are 8 successful endings depending on how you defeat the King, and whether or not Kianmay survives. What I remember is:
SPOILER
1. Summon the giant elephant. This requires you to find a magic scroll of summoning and an ivory comb. 2. Agree to give Darm the Diamond Key, then poison him with an assassin's ring when you get close enough. 3. Agree to give Darm the Diamond Key and then stab him with a crystal dagger. 4. Use a serpent Gauntlet that you got if you went to the Land of the Serpent people and passed the Trial. 5. Find the Eagle Ring, which will allow you to approach Darm unawares and dispatch him. 6. Find the magical scroll that manifests one's inner nature. It's in the magician's study, but you'll need something to enter the study and something else to be able to read the spell. Number 6 is the 'best' ending as it allows you to resolve the conflict without having to kill the King and you get the girl.
Greetings - Played "The Diamond Key" a few times now. I've quite liked it and it is an enjoyable one. Even if every single time I die in the end...
Wanted to ask a Question or two : P.s. the next bit has lots of item and some situational spoilers.
SPOILER
Can you Actually get Magic in "The Diamond Key" or does Darm kill you everytime with it? Note that I've even played with characters with 24 Stamina, 17 Skill and 17 luck, via magic vials and quest upgrades. But I can't seem to find the spell that can cancel Darms Final attack... Items I had previously : Holy BroadSword, Firesword, Chainmail, Shield, Helmet, Random amounts of Misc items as well as minor magical ones
It's quite frustrating when you cannot lose in a Combat, but given time, the Boss / Wizard just goes Zap.
I have added four gamebooks by Andrew Wright to the downloads page. They are : The Hills Of Phoros Rampage! In The Shade Of The Pango Tree Debacle At Dead Man's Inn
I'd read that article before. He certainly has an interesting theory, whether he truly believes it or not. Yet another take on the most famous mistake in FF history. (By his reasoning, though, should the player be looking for secret references on every section he/she comes across?
By the by. Fans of Creature of Havoc (and I am one) will probably be aware of the alleged mistake that occurs in this book. Most walk-throughs draw attention to this. The following link is to an article by an AI fan and interactive fiction writer called Stephen Bond on this book and the mistake in question which is very interesting.

He is a bit harsh about FF books in general, but his theory, as they say, deserves to be true!
I never encountered Space Ace or Dragon's Lair during the 80s... An interesting parallel is that Sierra, who developed Space Quest, also produced another fantasy-based adventure game called King's Quest. It's my intention to get onto that next...
Do you remember an arcade game called "Space Ace?" I remember it being different from other games in that it was quite cinematic. It was pretty humorous, in the same vein as WWGB. (There was another, fantasy based game as well, a D & D type of setting, by the same company).
Over the last week I've been playing the 80s adventure game series Space Quest on my computer. There are many similarities with the WWGB gamebook series... I wasn't thinking of Space Quest when I wrote it, but I think it must be have been an unconscious influence. Anyway, all 6 episodes are available for download out there for those who remember this game.
