The Diamond Key
Reading through the list of names on the "downloads" page, I was struck by a preponderance of unwitting double-entendres, my two favourite being two books which should surely be in the same series: "The Quest for the Ebony Wand" and "Pit of Peril". This made me consider whether one of the defining characteristics of the Fighting Fantasy Series (as with the God-father of all sword and sorcery- Tolkein) is an amazingly coy attitude to sex. In these frequently gory and even gratuitously violent works, no mention was ever given to the motive force which presumably was responsible for Titan's population (although the illustations of "Vampyres" etc. were somewhat less inhibited).

To this effect, I have to praise the Diamond Key, which managed to be serious and avoid puerility whilst having some element of the erotic in the form of various semi-human lovelies (a theme that seems to resurface in the WWGB series frequently). In particular, strengthening your fire-balls has never been so enjoyable.

You can use your character from the first two adventures in the saga - "In the Shade of the Pango Tree" or "Debacle at Dead Man's Inn" , or you can use the new character that comes with the adventure.

Let me know what you think!

Windhammer Competition
Release of Schedule and Guidelines for the 2010 Windhammer Prize

Arborell.com is pleased to announce the release of the schedule and guidelines for the 2010 Windhammer Prize for Short Gamebook Fiction. Now in its third year the Windhammer Prize continues as a means to promote the gamebook genre, and to provide exposure within a competitive environment for aspiring gamebook authors. Sponsored by Arborell.com it is a prize that encourages creative and original works of interactive fiction whilst providing the challenge of meeting stringent size criteria and a limited development period.

For authors considering entry please be aware that with the growth of the Windhammer Prize there are important changes to the competition for this year, including the extension of the submission and voting periods and the provision of cash prizes to all winning entrants.

If you are considering submitting an entry in this year's competition the new guidelines can be found at
http://www.arborell.com/windhammer_prize_2010.html

Information on previous prizes, winners and other competition details can be found at the Windhammer Prize pages at Arborell.com.

The Diamond Key
Hello Drakol.

It's no secret that to defeat King Darm at the end you should be aquiring magical items to use against him. If I recall correctly, there are 8 successful endings depending on how you defeat the King, and whether or not Kianmay survives.
What I remember is:

END SPOILER

I hope that helps.

Gaetano:

I agree that this falls squarely into the "ingenious but flawed" category, like so many literary musings. What are the other takes on this mistake?

I'd read that article before. He certainly has an interesting theory, whether he truly believes it or not. Yet another take on the most famous mistake in FF history. (By his reasoning, though, should the player be looking for secret references on every section he/she comes across?

By the by. Fans of Creature of Havoc (and I am one) will probably be aware of the alleged mistake that occurs in this book. Most walk-throughs draw attention to this. The following link is to an article by an AI fan and interactive fiction writer called Stephen Bond on this book and the mistake in question which is very interesting.

http://plover.net/~bonds/creatureofhavoc.html

He is a bit harsh about FF books in general, but his theory, as they say, deserves to be true!

Those games were famous for 1 thing: Making them intentional unwinnable. Just check the TVTropes pages.

I never encountered Space Ace or Dragon's Lair during the 80s...
An interesting parallel is that Sierra, who developed Space Quest, also produced another fantasy-based adventure game called King's Quest. It's my intention to get onto that next...

Do you remember an arcade game called "Space Ace?" I remember it being different from other games in that it was quite cinematic. It was pretty humorous, in the same vein as WWGB. (There was another, fantasy based game as well, a D & D type of setting, by the same company).

Over the last week I've been playing the 80s adventure game series Space Quest on my computer. There are many similarities with the WWGB gamebook series... I wasn't thinking of Space Quest when I wrote it, but I think it must be have been an unconscious influence.
Anyway, all 6 episodes are available for download out there for those who remember this game.
